SplitChaos Privacy Policy
Effective date: 3 September 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how SplitChaos collects, uses, stores, and shares information when you use the SplitChaos iOS app. SplitChaos is a shared-expense tracker. It is not a bank, payment processor, or money-transfer service.
Information We Collect
Account and profile information
You can use SplitChaos as a guest, or sign in with Apple or Google. We receive and store the account identifier supplied through Firebase Authentication. When available and permitted by the sign-in provider, we may receive your name, email address, and profile image. We also store the display name you use in groups.
Group and expense information
We store the content needed to run shared groups: group names, invite codes, membership, member display names, roles, expenses, expense categories, amounts, currencies, split details, settlement records, notes where provided, recurring-expense settings, and activity timestamps. This information is visible to members of the relevant group so that balances and history can be shared.
Receipt images
If you choose a receipt image, SplitChaos accesses only the photo you select and uploads a compressed copy to Firebase Storage for the relevant group expense. Receipt images may contain personal or financial details, so please do not upload anything you would not want group members to see.
Notifications and device information
If you allow notifications, we store a Firebase Cloud Messaging token and your group-notification preference to send group activity updates. We also schedule optional on-device reminders. You can change notification permission in iOS Settings and turn group activity notifications on or off in SplitChaos.
Usage and diagnostic information
We use Firebase Analytics to understand feature use, such as screens viewed and actions taken, and Firebase Crashlytics to receive crash reports and non-fatal error diagnostics. These services may collect device, app-version, operating-system, and technical diagnostic information needed to operate their services.
Support communications
If you contact us by email or through the support page, we receive the information you choose to include, such as your name, email address, phone number, and support request.
How We Use Information
- Provide sign-in, guest access, group membership, expense splitting, settlements, and recurring expenses.
- Sync shared group information across members' devices.
- Store and display receipt images attached to expenses.
- Send group activity notifications and optional reminders when you have enabled them.
- Secure the service, diagnose errors, improve reliability, and understand aggregate app use.
- Respond to support requests and enforce these Terms of Use.
How Information Is Shared
We do not sell personal information. Information in a group is shared with that group's members. Group members can see the shared expense history, balances, settlements, and attached receipts. Group members may also be able to change group settings, remove members, or delete a group.
We use Google Firebase services for Authentication, Firestore, Cloud Storage, Cloud Functions, Cloud Messaging, Analytics, and Crashlytics. Apple and Google process sign-in information when you choose their sign-in methods. These providers process information under their own terms and privacy policies. We may also disclose information when required by law or when reasonably necessary to protect the service, users, or the public.
Data Retention and Deletion
Group and expense information is retained while the group exists. Deleting a group removes its group data, expenses, related records, and receipt images. Leaving a group removes your access to it, but shared history remains for the other members.
Receipt images are automatically removed when a group has been inactive for 30 days, or after 90 days even if the group remains active. The expense record remains after its receipt image is removed.
You can delete your account from Settings. This deletes your authentication account, profile, notification token, and private user records. Shared group expenses and limited membership metadata may remain as "Deleted member" history so that other members' group balances and records are not changed. Recurring expenses created by the deleted account are stopped.
Your Choices
- Use a guest account or choose Apple or Google sign-in.
- Edit or delete expenses and receipts where the app allows it.
- Leave or delete groups, subject to the group's settlement flow.
- Turn off group activity notifications in the app or all notifications in iOS Settings.
- Delete your account in Settings or contact us for privacy questions.
Security and International Processing
We use Firebase access controls and provider security measures designed to protect information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. Firebase and its service providers may process information in countries other than the country where you live.
Children
SplitChaos is not directed to children under 13. Do not use the app or provide personal information if you are under 13.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as the app changes. We will post the updated version here and update the effective date.
